A complete stranger asked me to pretend I had fallen asleep on his shoulder in the middle of a crowded flight,

Maybe some part of me understood before the rest of me did that I needed to stop treating what was happening as a marital argument and start remembering exactly what he was doing.

That evening, I learned that the household account I had used for groceries, utilities, preschool tuition, and nearly every ordinary expense had been restricted.

My debit card declined at a gas station.

I tried the banking app in the parking lot.

My access no longer worked.

I called David again.

He did not answer.

At 9:17 that night, he finally sent a text.

We’ll discuss finances when you’re ready to be reasonable.

The next morning, photographs appeared online of David at dinner with the woman I had been told not to worry about.

He was smiling.

She had her hand on his arm.

A mutual friend sent me the pictures with one sentence.

Blaire, I’m so sorry.

I stared at them for less than a minute before putting my phone facedown.

I had spent months begging reality to become something else.

There comes a point when even denial gets tired.

My cousin Natalie lived in Queens with her husband and their teenage son. When I finally told her what had happened, she did not ask why I had stayed so long.
