PART 2 — THE MAN BEHIND THE OLD SUIT
Daniel stood at the microphone holding the black envelope.
Nobody laughed anymore.
Not even Melissa.
The church had become so quiet that I could hear the faint ticking of the clock above the entrance.
Daniel pulled a document from the envelope.
He looked at it for a moment.
Then he looked at me.
“Grace,” [he said, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”]
My heart began pounding.
“What is that?” I whispered.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he turned toward the congregation.
“For the last eight months, many of you have seen me sleeping on benches, walking through the streets, wearing old clothes and asking strangers for nothing more than a cup of coffee.”
People stared at him.
“That wasn’t because I had nowhere to go.”
A murmur moved through the church.
Daniel continued.
“I had somewhere to go.”
He held up the document.
“I had everything.”
Melissa frowned.
Claire’s smile disappeared.
Janet sat forward.
Daniel took a breath.
“Three years ago, I owned a successful property management company.”
Someone gasped.
I stared at him.
Daniel had never told me anything about a company.
Never.
He had never mentioned money.
Never talked about wealth.
Never behaved like someone who had ever owned anything valuable.
“I owned several properties across Birmingham,” he continued. “I had employees. I had investments. I had a house.”
He paused.
“Then my father died.”
The room became still again.
“My father left me a large estate.”
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Daniel looked directly into my eyes.
“Because I needed to know whether someone could love me without knowing what I had.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“But why pretend to be homeless?”
He looked down.
“Because money changed everyone around me.”
He explained that after his father’s death, relatives he barely knew suddenly appeared.
Old friends returned.
Business partners became overly friendly.
People who had ignored him for years suddenly wanted something from him.
One person even tried to convince him to sign away part of the inheritance.
So Daniel disappeared.
He stopped using his expensive car.
He rented a tiny room under another name.
He dressed in old clothes.
And he lived like someone with nothing.
Then one rainy evening, he met me.
I had been leaving work late.
I saw him sitting outside a closed café.
He was soaked.
I offered him my umbrella.
He refused.
I insisted.
Then I bought him a sandwich.
He smiled.
That was how everything started.
I had no idea who he was.
And apparently, that’s exactly what he wanted.
But there was something else.
Something I didn’t know.
Daniel looked back at the congregation.
“The reason I asked Grace to marry me wasn’t because she helped me when she thought I was homeless.”
He paused.
“It was because she never once asked me what I could give her.”
I started crying.
He walked back toward me.
But before he reached me, Janet stood up.
“So you’re rich now?” she asked.
Daniel turned.
Janet’s face had changed completely.
“You mean you actually have money?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at the pastor.
“Pastor, there is one more thing.”
My tears stopped.
“What?” I whispered.
Daniel took another document from the envelope.
This one was much thicker.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
It was a legal document.
My name was written across the top.
GRACE JOHNSON.[]
I stared at Daniel.
“What is this?”
He gently took my hand.
“I wanted to give you this after our wedding.”
I opened the first page.
Then the second.
My mouth fell open.
“Daniel…”
He smiled sadly.
“This isn’t a gift.”
I looked at him.
“Then what is it?”
His voice became quieter.
“It’s something your family has been trying to hide from you for years.”
I stopped breathing.
“My family?”
Daniel nodded.
“And that’s why I had to find you before I married you.”
I stared at the document again.
There was a name on the final page.
A name I hadn’t seen in more than twenty years.
My father’s name.
And underneath it was a sentence that changed everything I thought I knew about my childhood.
TO BE CONTINUED…
Well we must not look down on anyone regardless of their circumstances, i’d like to get di conclusion of this story especially wat was in di envelope.
In life, never judge a book by its cover.
Human life is more important & needs to be celebrated wherever possible.
We should always be meek & humble, God will lift us up….
No one is common in the sight
Of God, we’re all created for a divine purpose to fulfill or occupy a place of destiny, so be careful of whom you mock. Let the story continue.
I would like to know what happened next.
