For twelve years, I believed the woman who raised me had simply walked away.
Then, on my 25th birthday, she appeared on my doorstep carrying a gift she had been waiting years to give me—and an envelope containing a truth that completely changed everything I thought I knew about my childhood.
Part 1
I came home from work on my 25th birthday expecting nothing more than leftover takeout and a few messages from friends.
Instead, there was a woman standing on my porch.
She held a small wrapped present. For a moment, I honestly wondered if exhaustion had made me imagine her.
She looked older than I remembered. Thinner, too. There was gray in her hair now that hadn’t been there before.
But I recognized her eyes immediately.
I’d looked into those eyes through scraped knees, childhood nightmares, fevers, and countless ordinary days.
“Anna?”
My knees nearly gave out.
She looked at me like someone who had been holding her breath for twelve years and had finally been allowed to breathe.
“Happy birthday, George.”
My eyes dropped to the package in her hands.
It was wrapped in faded yellow paper covered with tiny white stars.
I knew that paper.
