Eight months after divorcing me because I supposedly couldn’t give him a child, my ex-husband rang to invite me to his wedding — and proudly announced that his pregnant fiancée had succeeded where I had “failed.” He had no idea I was answering from a hospital bed with his newborn daughter asleep beside me.
The phone went just after sunrise.
I had given birth thirty-one hours earlier and everything from my ribs down belonged to somebody else. My daughter was asleep in the plastic cot at the side of the bed with one fist up by her ear.
And then I saw the name on the screen.
Ellis Prentiss.
Eight months since the divorce went through.
I answered it.
“Come to my wedding,” he said.
No hello. No how are you.
And then he laughed.
“You should see what a real woman looks like, Noor. Ondine’s pregnant.”
I did not say anything.
“Unlike you.”
And beside me, in the cot, his daughter made a small noise in her sleep.
“You still there?”
“Yes.”
“You always wanted a family,” he said. “Thought you might enjoy watching me finally get one.”
Two losses. Nineteen months of appointments. Nights on a bathroom floor at three in the morning. A husband who used the word broken in an argument in 2023 and never took it back, and a mother-in-law who said barren at a lunch table in front of six people and laughed as though it were affectionate.
