My mother-in-law tore my dress in half in my own kitchen in front of twenty people and shouted that her son had paid for everything in it. Then I put my phone down on the counter and let it run.

PART 1 — EVERY THREAD

“Tear one more thing, Delfina, and this door might not open for you tomorrow.”

I said it quietly. Quietly enough that the whole kitchen went silent.

There were about twenty-five people in that house. Marco’s side, mostly. Two of his cousins, an uncle, four of Delfina’s friends from the parish, and my own sister by the sink.

Every one of them stopped.

Except her.

She still had the white dress in both hands. I had bought it on the Thursday for a dinner at the Marquez the following week, with a client I had been working on for eleven months.

“You’re threatening me in my son’s house?”

“It isn’t your son’s house.”

She did not hear it. People do not hear things that do not fit.

“You’d have nothing without Marco.”

And she pulled.

That dress went in half at the seam with a noise I was not ready for, and it was not about the money. It was the sound of it in a room full of people who had known me for nine years.

Marco was by the fridge with a bottle in his hand.

“Mamá. That’s enough.”

That is what my husband said. Three words, at about half the volume he uses to order coffee.
