MY BROTHER WORE A BRIGHT RED SUIT TO DAD’S FUNERAL AND I WAS FURIOUS — UNTIL DAD’S ATTORNEY ASKED WHERE HE GOT IT.
IT HAD BEEN HIDDEN IN A SECRET CLOSET WITH ERIC’S NAME ON IT, AND SEWN INTO THE LINING WAS THE THING OUR FATHER WAS NEVER BRAVE ENOUGH TO SAY.
Chapter 1: The Red Suit
My brother wore a bright red suit to Dad’s funeral — I was furious until Dad’s attorney asked where he got it.
My name is Sarah. My brother Eric arrived at our father’s funeral in a bright red suit, while every other man wore black. I was mortified. “Dad would’ve hated this.” Eric said quietly, “No. He wouldn’t.”
Afterward, Dad’s attorney Mr. Lawson saw the jacket and went pale. “Where did you get that suit?” Eric had found it in a hidden closet behind a bookcase in Dad’s study, three suits in garment bags — two black, one red, the red one pinned with a note bearing Eric’s name.
Mr. Lawson felt something crackle in the lining. He cut the hand-stitched thread and pulled out a letter and documents. “Your father made me promise this would only reach you if you found the red suit and chose to wear it.”
