My Husband Left After We Lost One of Our Twin Daughters—Thirteen Years Later, My Father Finally Told Me Why Kertati

Part 1 — The Box My Father Had Hidden for Thirteen Years

The first time my father spoke my husband’s name in thirteen years, my daughter was upstairs celebrating the birthday her twin sister never lived long enough to see.

Lily had just turned eighteen.

For most of the evening, our house had been filled with music, laughter, half-eaten slices of cake, and teenagers moving from room to room as though they owned the place.

I had smiled more than I expected to.

Birthdays had always been complicated.

[They belonged to Lily.]

But they also belonged to Emily.

Every candle Lily blew out marked another year her sister had never been given.

I had learned not to let that grief overshadow my living daughter. Lily deserved joy without feeling guilty for surviving.

Still, every year, after the guests left and the house became quiet, I allowed myself a few private minutes to remember that once, on this exact date, I had held two babies instead of one.

That night, the last of Lily’s friends left shortly after ten.

I was gathering paper plates from the living room when Dad appeared in the kitchen carrying a plain cardboard box.

He set it on the table.
