— The Night Everything Changed
Heavy rain followed me through Memphis the night I planned to change my parents’ lives forever.
My phone rested on the passenger seat, displaying the notification I had reread several times.
Tranche one payment: $8,000,000 deposited.
It was the first payment from the $31.5 million sale and licensing agreement for the logistics platform I had spent five years building.
For the first time in my life, I had more money than I knew what to do with.
But I wasn’t thinking about luxury cars or expensive vacations.
I was thinking about my parents.
I had spent years helping them pay household expenses, covering emergencies, giving my mother access to one of my credit cards, and rescuing them whenever they somehow found themselves short of money.
That night, I believed I was finally going to change their lives permanently.
I was going to pay their debts.
Maybe even make sure they never had to worry about money again.
When I reached their house, rainwater dripping from my hair, I walked toward the front door with a smile already forming.
Then I heard my father’s voice.
“If that girl discovers the $470,000 inheritance, everything is ruined.”
I froze.
My hand stopped inches from the door.
Then my mother whispered something that made my stomach turn.
“We have to find a way to get her out of the family before she finds out about the inheritance.”
I stood there in the rain, listening to the people I had spent years protecting talk about me as if I were an obstacle.
I had arrived carrying news of a $31.5 million deal.
They were inside planning to steal $117,500 from me.
I slowly opened the door.
And decided not to tell them a thing about the money in my account.
Not yet.
Because before they knew what I had, I needed to know exactly what they were planning.
